Hello to all --
Sorry this isn't a reply to the prior article in thread on Industry
Standard article. I lost all info re prior post, so can't put this one
into the thread.
The Industry Standard article appears to be the one titled "Linux Makes
Moves at Comdex...But there was little else to fire the imagination at
the 20-year-old trade show." Is that the one you had in mind? If so,
it's now (Wed. morning) posted at:
http://www.thestandard.com/article/display/0,1151,7706,00.html
A very interesting, encouraging article; Sounds like Linus got a warm,
friendly, great response at Comdex.
Different subject: This has been in the press a little, recently, but
it doesn't seem like it got very much attention. Just so it doesn't go
un-noticed: (Also, per above article, Linus spoke of Linux making
inroads on the desktop; Following might be one thing which might help
Linux):
One of Microsoft's so-called "myths" about Linux has to do with "total
costs of ownership" of Linux versus Windows 2000. In that light, I found
Microsoft's announced new price structure for Windows 2000 to be quite
revealing: According to news accounts, a Client Access License fee may
be required by MS (a new way of MS doing it) for each person needing
authentication -- for example, Web secure transactions? CNET says:
"...As a result, customers planning to move e-commerce applications from
Windows NT to Windows 2000 could face a price increase. "
See the article, "Microsoft outlines Windows 2000 pricing...A new
pricing method for the forthcoming Windows 2000 operating system could
prove costly to some e-commerce businesses..." URL on CNET is:
