Check the logs. I usually find that weird time delays are usually related to
name resolution so check your hosts and resolv.conf files. You might redirect
the output from startx to a file to see everything it is spitting out. If you
are feeling really manly you could walk through the startx script and where it
runs X put strace X and redirect the output to a file, but that is only last
resort type stuff. Whats in your xinitrc file?
