My mistake, you are correct afaik...

No, I am not using KDM, I am still using dtlogin.  You can stop dtlogin from
running - it is started in /etc/rc2.d.  

I played around with not using dtlogin and starting Xsun manually, but it didn't
work very well.  I ended up causing a kernel panic and getting thrown out to
the boot monitor.
