Wow! That'll be "A Good Thing" if it takes off. (Although
comp.lang.python - or whatever it is - is going to get "interesting"
with 50 million schoolkids on the scene! :-)

Well - I'm not personally excited by Python - but it WILL be
an excellent choice for this project.

One of the computer literacy ideas that I've been tossing around
is this:

Bear in mind it's written for teachers and little kids - and
not computer professionals!
I have yet to find a teacher who'd let me try it out on real
kids...but in any case, it's a work-in-progress
...I've also done an updated port of the old Berkely LOGO
interpreter to Linux with the idea of teaching it to my 8yr
old son. (I should probably put that back into the public
domain sometime).
