thought about that, but the problem is that the boxes live on several
networks around the world and I don't want to have to mount NFS from say
Germany back here to Dallas.  I know, I just need a NFS/NIS server at
each location, but security of NFS and NIS scares the sh^Htuff out of
me.  I don't trust them.  

Not saying it is a bad idea, it is the only one I have really seen/come
up with.  
I am just not sure if that is the way I want to tackle it.
