The ipchains/masquerading stuff is well documented and almost
disapointingly easy to do. The hard part will be your cable modem
provider. I've been fighting with Chaters service for two weeks.

1. The installer knew nothing about Linux, TCP/IP, or networks. But he
had been on the job for two months and I gave him a copy of Redhat
because he was intrested in learning more.

2. After two days, I could no longer got consistent ARP responses to
my router. it took two weeks of calls and e-mails to finally talk to
first tier tech support. And the first words out of the call desks
mouth after I described my setup was 'We do not support Linux!'.

I patiently explained that I had setup a pack sniffer and saw my system
send out the arp and only very rarely get a response. I then got to
wait thirty minutes to talk to tier two tech support.

3. I went through the 'We do not support Linux' routine again and
explained that I knew TCP/IP very well, my tests, my results, and the
fact that I did not expect them to become Linux gurus just to support
me. They could ping my designated gateway but saw way too much singal
loss after that. I was then told a cable tech would call within 24
hours (my fault for expecting that to be contiguous hours).

4. Even with only spotty service, I've had four sites try to telnet
into my box. So use IP chains, tcp wrappers, and check your system!

Conculsion: Have lots of patience, like bad Muzak 'cause you'll hear
lots of it if you have to call, and give away a copy of Linux to the
installer.
