They are temporarily solved, I tossed in an old video card.  

Seems  that my current video card isn't supported.  This is an interesting
machine, the apparently equivalent of the e machines and the like with a
built in NIC, which did have a Linux driver, an SiS built in, 6320 I think,
that isn't supported (but I'll kept a watch).  My next task is to determine
if the built in modem and/sound card work.  Not a problem if they don't,
but it would be nice if they did.  I perfer external modems anyway, and
have a ZOOM that is supported attached to it.
