JOB DESCRIPTION:
The engineer will perform pro-active work within the environment to maintain
best practices and keep a steady state. The engineer will be responsible for
establishing standards and best practices for UNIX operating system and
application administration as well as hardware support. The engineer will serve
as the highest escalation point within the support team for UNIX operating
system and application support and administration as well as hardware support.
This will include troubleshooting and resolution of re-active incidents as well
as root cause determination analysis for customer issues running on UNIX based
Operating Systems. The engineer must possess a high technical aptitude and be
able to logically step through a problem even when dealing with unfamiliar
environments and products. The engineer will be available for escalations during
and after regular business hours. They will communicate with client services and
customers as needed regarding incidents and changes.
Qualified candidates MUST possess the following:
• 7+ years’ experience and a solid experience profile that can be demonstrated
with UNIX or UNIX like operating systems using one or more of the operating
systems below:
o Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Intel x86-64
o Solaris 8,9, or 10 on Intel X86-64 or SPARC
o HPUX
o AIX
o FreeBSD, OpenBSD
• 7+ years large environment experience working with enterprise server
platforms; preferably HP Proliant, IBM xSeries, and Sun.
• Strong working knowledge of Internet networking technologies and principals
including TCP/IP and DNS/BIND.
• Proven ability to absorb, master and leverage emerging technologies.
• 3+ years creating code and scripting in operating system shells.
• 7+ year’s general UNIX system administration experience.
• 3+ years of experience in support of and administration with any of the following:
o Apache
o TomCat
o JBOSS
o PHP
o MYSQL
o DNS/BIND
o Postfix
o Sendmail
• Networking architecture and troubleshooting, operations management.
• Experience in supporting I.T. systems and infrastructure in a 24x7 production
environment.
• Experience and expertise supporting UNIX Server 2003, 2008, UNIX clustering,
IIS, and MS Active Directory in a systems administrator role.
• Expertise in UNIX administration utilizing scripting and other forms of
automation.
• Experience supporting and administering HP or IBM server and storage hardware.
• Web technology experience for the MS UNIX platform, including multiple tier
web/application layer designs.
• Expertise with network troubleshooting at the server level.
• Expertise with DNS, WINS and UNIX networking protocols.
• Exceptional analytical and problem solving skills, with logical problem
solving Strong understanding of troubleshooting techniques.
• Experience with high availability environment with 99.99% SLA
Preferred qualifications include:
• Virtualization experience using VMWare, XEN, or VirtualBox. Prefer VMWare VCP
Certifications.
• Certified as RHCE for version 4 or 5.
• Solaris SCSA for version 10.
• HPUX Certifications
• Oracle experience as it relates to troubleshooting and support.
• Technical Lead experience or senior level escalations experience.
• Intel, AMD based blade server experience, using any UNIX or LINUX version.
• Sun Blade System experience.
• EGenera Blade system experience.
• Monitoring tools - HP Openview, Remedy, and Quest & Sun.
• Veritas Software Suite knowledge (HA, VCS, NetBackup).
• Practical or educational background in development principles.
• Any developer experience using PERL, PHP, C++ with an emphasis on LAMP stack
support and troubleshooting.
• Performs pro-active work within the environment to maintain best practices for
UNIX platform systems.
• Recommend appropriate solutions for problem resolution and work with the
account managers and customers to implement the solutions.
• Assist with development of deployment and upgrade strategies for updates to
UNIX platform systems.
• Audit patch levels and upgrades for UNIX systems.
• Work directly with customers to validate, confirm and assess UNIX platform
system requirements.
• Assist with development of technology and solution specifications for new and
existing designs.
• Communicate with internal teams for awareness of known errors.
• Create performance benchmarks and perform capacity and performance assessments
of UNIX platform systems.
• Identify & develop process/procedures/standards for UNIX platform systems.
• Plan, recommend, and implement capacity, growth and changes for UNIX platform
architecture.
• Test and implement new releases of UNIX software where required.
• Works break fix issues and change requests to completion while actively and
thoroughly documenting all work in a ticketing system. Schedules customer
conference calls to assist in troubleshooting when needed.
• Available for escalations during and outside of regular business hours.
Responds to escalation calls promptly after hours and continues work through to
resolution.
