Service Engineers at Yahoo! thrive on the scale and mission-critical
nature of our complex advertising systems as well as the challenge
that comes along with their operation. In this critical role, you'll
utilize your rare combination of significant UNIX systems experience,
network knowledge, troubleshooting skills, and coding sensibilities to
design, deploy, monitor, and automate all operational aspects of
Yahoo!'s revenue-critical search and advertising platforms. The ideal
candidate is a technical generalist with skills ranging from
production systems/network management to software development.
This is a full time position.
Responsibilities:
- Take part in designing and deploying the next generation of Yahoo!
Advertising; implement and automate large scale serving environments.
- Solve challenges along the way: build tools, triage bugs, mentor
peers, and interact with other brilliant people across a wide variety
of technical and creative disciplines.
- Work with software developers and QA teams; help get bleeding edge
code stable and to the marketplace quicker.
- Understand and introduce new technologies and make serving platforms
scale along with business growth.
- Lead by example, deliver results and eliminate missed opportunities.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate enjoys a fun and very busy work environment, will
jump in to debug and fix things, and multitasks and context-switches
well. Candidate is talented across a variety of disciplines including:
System Administration, Network Operations, Software Development, Build
and Release Engineering, Performance Engineering, and Site Operations.
- BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent
- Minimum 5+ years of industry experience
- Prior experience supporting 24x7, highly available,
service-oriented, distributed production system (>500 systems) and
will eventually participate in on-call support rotation.
- Strong understanding of best practices around web operations,
software development, release engineering, quality assurance.
- Strong written & oral communication skills are essential. Proven
ability to write bugs, test cases, problem reports.
- Ability to rapidly learn and assimilate knowledge of complex
software and systems, and apply understanding of system architecture
when planning operational tasks and strategy.
- Knowledge of Unix API internals, Linux kernel, and performance
tuning/profiling a plus.
- Experience with grid computing / Hadoop / Map-Reduce a plus.
- Substantial experience administering, supporting, debugging and tuning:
Unix-based OSes; Linux on x86 hardware; open source tools
Web servers & proxies, Apache, HTTP load balancing
Monitoring: Nagios, rrd, process automation, oncall paging/alert systems
- Experience with statistical analysis of defects and system performance a plus.
- Enjoys scripting and has excellent coding skills: bash, Python,
Ruby, Perl. Experience programming in C++ or Java a plus.
- Data-oriented programming experience a plus: SQL, XML, JSON, schema,
structured storage, message-based architecture.
- Hands on experience w/ revision control, build & release tools:
Subversion, Perforce, Git, CVS, make, ant, bamboo.
- Proven experience implementing software release management, build
infrastructure, packaging and deployment a plus.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking, SMTP, HTTP, load-balancers,
highly available network servers.
