<DIV>First, I apologize if you took my post as a "flame"--for that wasn't
my intent.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I am in the process of rebuilding this box, which must run Windows
because of the software that I must use for work (technical writing).
Soon, I will be running it on top of Linux (either Win4Lin or VMWare, I
haven't yet decided that). My Linux boxes will be rededicated for use by
my fiancee and her son once they are here, so I'm making this one a
dual-boot machine. I am this evening looking through the issues of
dual-booting a Win2K machine with Linux, prior to setting it up. The
faster disk will be running Linux, of course!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Second, I couldn't find my copy of Eudora, which I had used in
Windows for several years for email. Rather than the somewhat more limited
mail client in Opera, I downloaded a new one yesterday called Incredimail.
It's full of various bells and whistles, but I'll have to find out what
could be causing the effect on my mail you mention. I appreciate your
telling me--if I can't overcome it, I will simply change mail clients
again.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The only reason I answered about the statement on U.S. law and
automobile responsibility was that I thought it might give misinformation
that someone might remember--to his detriment--in case of a future
accident. (You may remember you gave some very positive statements about
the law, rather than moderating them with "I think" or "I understand
that...") While my own understanding of the law is not current, I was
fairly careful to only speak about that which I am sure of. (I haven't
practiced law for many years, so it would take quite a bit of research to
be sure of more details than I listed). </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I am always surprised at what people "know" about the law. We are all
laboring under various misapprehensions. The only problem is, I have seen
times when some details that were omitted from the original statement have
caused delay and expense for others when something happened to them later.
While I'm not too keen on most lawyers (the biggest reason I got out of
it!), good ones earn their money by dealing with a very complex
system.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>As for Microsoft, I am actually watching with interest, for I believe
within the next few years, there will be someone who has the money and the
interest to go after them for the lamentable lack of quality in their
stuff. It is becoming more widely understood that they are costing
consumers and the economy in general a great deal of money each year. The
"Microsoft Tax" is obviously something it is high time we get rid of. In
fact, when I can finally turn off my last Windows box, I'll be a much
happier man!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Meanwhile, though, I have quite a bit of software which works on
Windows. You wouldn't believe the incredible penalties you pay when you
seek UNIX versions of FrameMaker +SGML, for example!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Again, sorry if you took offense to my hurried post...and let's both
hope Microsoft is forced to at least increase the damage control before
they release new software!</DIV>
