<P><FONT SIZE=2>Are you using PPPoE?</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2> NO. I have an external DSL modem talking to my ethernet card.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2>Do you have to authenticate to the SWB network?</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2> Only for newsgroups.</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2>If so, how did you configure the Linux box?</FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2> The normal Mandrake install recognizes my ethernet card. DHCP is enabled</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> and handles all the configuration that is needed when I boot. </FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2> For newsgroups, I am prompted for a password. </FONT>
</P>
<P><FONT SIZE=2> My only problem is that periodically (it seems after every thunderstorm) my </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> DSL dies. The local router is glitched. The only way to get it back is to</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> call the support lines and waste 45 minutes letting them talk me through</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> checking the windows settings. Only after they have convinced themselves </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> that it isn't my Windows settings will they refer the problem to the next</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> level (where they send a reset to the routers and fix the problem). I </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> don't know what they would do if I didn't have a Windows partition.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2>Can you suggest some docs?</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> NO.</FONT>

<P><FONT SIZE=2>Quoting Gorwood, Steve <sgorwood@ti.com>:</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> When SW Bell installed on my computer, they insisted on a Windows</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> installation and</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> wanted to see an original Windows install CD. I let them install on my</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> Windows</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> partition and worked my Linux issues myself.</FONT>

<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> Does anyone have experience with Southwestern</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> Bell's DSL service in The Colony, TX?</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> I was told by Southwestern Bell that they require</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> authentication software on the computer. And that</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> I MUST use an MS Windows OS in order to take</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> advantage of the free 'self install' option.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> If I choose to use Linux ... there will be a</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> $200.00 charge for a technician to come to my</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> house and install ... whatever it is they require.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> Is there a way around this?</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> Does anyone know of an alternative DSL provider</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> for The Colony Texas?</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> I searched for providers on the Internet but only</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> found one or two other providers. One of these</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> only provided ADSL (voice + Internet). The fees</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> are very high for the alternate providers I found.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> Covade : 89$ (IDSL, yuk) + equip/install charges = >$500.00</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> InterConnect : $109 to $279 equip/install = ? (Why even look?)</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> IDT : $115 to $199 equip/install = ?</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> SWB : ~$50.00 + $99.00 equip.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> Verizon is priced very competitively, but they cannot</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> service The Colony.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> It looks like SWB owns me!!!</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=2> </FONT>
