3d support in VB does depend on having the right video card and
drivers.  is this system the same hardware that worked on other OSes?

Yes, all other distros work fine...I see they are 3d enabled and my mint 
isn't in the VM..I don't see an option - once a distro is installed - to 
enable 3d?  If fact, most features are greyed out!!  That's strange, one 
might need to make adjustments once an OS is installed?
