[NTLUG:Discuss] Gentoo Live CD 2007.0 root password

I have the Gentoo LiveCD 2007.0 for amd64.  I downloaded from the Gentoo
site and burned it.  When it finishes booting up, I get a login screen
asking for a username/password.  I put in root/null, but no dice.  Then it
counts down and logs me in as "gentoo".  I'm trying to do some fsck stuff
and I need root.  I've done su - from xterm logged in as gentoo, but I can't
figure out what the password is.  I've looked on the online documentation,
and all I can find is that it should log me in as root by default, but it's
not doing that.  Does anyone know the root password?  Thank you.
