Log into X as root. Does the sound work? If it does
look carefully at the process tables (ctrl-esc will
start the process table) between root and your user
acct and kill whatever is active only in the user
acct. 

Mandriva saves your session by default, so some dead
processes will restart on a logout/login, even on a
cold boot.  You can find the option to 'save session'
in the system settings.
