do you rarely use the sys.

if not, it is better for the hdwr to leave it on, thermal cycling the 
semiconductors is a major cause of faulure

also a spinup spindown cycle is much harder on the hdd han leaving it on

I never turn mine off unless for hdwr upgrades

they last me years


if you want you can "ifdown eth0" to close access from net when you dont 
use it

ifup etho when ready to get online
