It is not often you will hear me say this, but Solaris might be a better option than Linux when running Samba on Sun hardware. Let me qualify this by saying I have not seen any recent benchmarks, but historically Samba has been faster on Solaris than on Linux.
Do some more homework before you make this decision. The newsgroup comp.protocols.smb (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&group=comp.protocols.smb) is a good place to ask.
