No your not alone!!
I've looked at LDAP 3 or 4 times and each look tells me that I'll be 
spending days not hours trying to integrate it into my network.  I also 
get a real sick feeling that I won't be able to maintain 100% up time 
during the transition.  So as long as I can find and install NIS I'll be 
sticking with it.
As far as security goes, it has not proved to be a problem since I don't 
allow external logins.  I don't allow NIS through the firewall to the 
outside world so nobody even knows it's running unless they are inside.
