Yes, I use it exclusively from the command line.
In an Xterm, 'mplayer -vo x11 -ao oss -fs <movie.name>
and outside of an X session, 'mplayer -vo vesa -ao oss -fs <movie.name>
work best for me.  With X, you can even tell it to use the root window,
with the -rootwin flag.  That's cool.
